Should Highland Heights allow electronic message board signs?

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Highland Heights City Council will discuss whether to allow electronic message board signs in the city at its Committee of the Whole meeting tonight.

Councilman Chuck Brunello said a request to install an electronic message board sign from Security Self Storage on Bishop Road prompted the discussion.

The city's charter does not address the signs that feature screens with messages scanning across. Currently there are two in the city that are only used for government purposes, Brunello said.

"I don't really mind the electronic signs but it's not something I'm going to jump through hoops to get passed," he said. "The signage we have currently is fine. I haven't heard any complaints from businesses or residents about not being able to see a sign. Nothing along those lines whatsoever."

Highland Heights is one of several communities to discuss electronic message board signs lately. Richmond Heights Councilman Mark Alexander introduced an ordinance at a council meeting last week that would allow the signs, and Rocky River and Lyndhurst have also addressed the topic.

The meeting begins at 8 p.m. in city hall, 5827 Highland Road. NEOMG reporter Sara Dorn will cover the meeting live in the comments section below.
